PROPER RATIO AND TIPS IN MIXING CEMENT FOR A SOLID FOUNDATION
Concrete is the single most important material in modern construction, and the proportions of concrete mix are the most crucial parts of working with concrete. Residential homes and commercial buildings collapse in the absence of concrete, bridges lack anchors, piers or abutments, tunnels, walkways, curbs, sewer systems. Concrete is truly the foundation of development. Hence, it is important to ensure its strength to secure a solid foundation for any construction project. Concrete contains only four basic ingredients: cement, gravel, sand, and water, yet each performs a specific role. There are different ratios in making these ingredients which we shall discuss in this article.
The four-two-one ratio and the seven-part mix ratio
For any concrete mix, four-two-one is the best bet: four parts crushed rock, two parts sand, and one part cement. The four-two-one combination includes seven pieces. Conveniently, the ratio can be mixed on any scale while mixing concrete. That can be four shovels of rock, two buckets of sand, and one bucket of cement; four 5-gallon buckets of rock, two buckets of sand, and one bucket of cement; or four front-end loader buckets of rock, two buckets of sand, and one bucket of cement. However, the four-two-one ratio is not appropriate in all situations. For projects requiring exceptional compressive strength, such as the floor of a diesel engine mechanic shop, a larger amount of rock is required: perhaps a five-two-one-and-a-half combination. More sand and less rock is preferable for projects that do not require high compressive strength but a high degree of workability, such as a garden fountain: a two-four-one mix is possible.
Three-three-one ratio
One of the best concrete mixing ratios for a slab is 3:3:1 (stone, sand, cement), which produces a concrete mix with a compressive strength of 3000 psi. This mixture is ideal for a shed slab, but it is also suitable for most concrete patios, footings, steps, and foundation walls. When water is mixed with cement, sand, and stone, a paste is formed that coats the stone and binds the materials together once the mixture hardens. The amount of water used to mix the concrete will determine its strength. Generally, the more water you use to mix the concrete (the more fluid the mix), the weaker the concrete mix. The stronger the concrete mix, the less water you use to mix it (it should be relatively dry yet workable). Concrete mixing ratios can be accurately calculated by measuring the dry components with buckets or even a shovel.
As a general tip, the more that water is present in concrete mix proportions, the lower the cured tensile strength and adhesive strength of the cement. If good adhesion is a top goal, the least amount of water possible is ideal. Additionally, the bigger the amount of rock, the greater the compressive strength of concrete. The more sand there is, the better the workability. But, there are occasions when workability is more important than structural integrity, and water is the key to workability.
