Argus and its 5 Years of Ecotourism partnership with Davao Oriental
Argus Builders, a Davao hotel and resort construction firm, worked as the contractor entrusted with the ecotourism development project for the Province of Davao Oriental.
A contract that spanned a total of 5 years, 2011 to 2016, some of the iconic tourism highlights we developed and preserved were Aligwagwag Falls Eco Park, Subangan Museum, Mt. Hamiguitan World Heritage Park, and the full-fledged Pusan Science Discovery Center. The project was successfully completed and turned over to the management of the province's local government unit.
Being a Davao hotel and resort builder, Argus Builders saw the importance of supporting ecotourism development during the contract as this improved the employment status of the community, increased income for the local government, which in turn strengthened the overall growth of their community.
With the right material, and structural design, investing in ecotourism sites like the project we did for Davao Oriental will benefit future generations and become inspiration to other communities as well.
Throughout this partnership, Argus Senior Engineer Aldrich Morante said that they have picked up several sustainable ecotourism lessons all throughout the years of renovating and improving different notable places in Davao Oriental.
SUITABLE COASTAL CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS
Considering Davao Oriental being surrounded with coastal areas, there is no denying that some of the projects under Argus are situated near coasts which require specific construction considerations compared to normal construction projects.
“We use Natural Wood only rather than Steel since it tends to oxidize and corrode if used at Coastal Projects. Most likely if it will be made of Steel Structure the service life is shorter that those made of Wood,” Engr. Morante said.
Natural disasters like cyclones in coastal areas leave extensive damage and wipe out the development done in no time. Morante said such natural disasters which have no solution from scientific community or modern technology even after centuries of research provide with only one option of restricting the magnitude of damage by using quality materials which are suitable and withstand these tropical weather conditions.
Damage from cyclones is instantaneous, but much more damage is waiting for buildings with regard to materials used, due to continuous exposure to saline atmosphere.
“The harsh environment requires sustainable building materials to be used and more care should be taken when using these materials in order to ensure durability, hazard resistance and reduce maintenance.”, he added
PRESERVATION AND MAINTENANCE
Morante shared the whole team’s awe when they learned before that Davao Oriental has numerous tourism spots that have great potential in gaining attention from different tourists nationwide.
This made Argus Builders realize how important it is to be mindful in the planning stages of preserving a specific Davao Oriental tourism spot.
“We have to make sure our material, processes, and plans have long-term effect on the preservation projects we have not only to please the client but to protect the site from any degradation,” Engr. Morante said.
LOGISTICS
Engr. Morante said in order to maximize client’s budget on Cost for Repair and Maintenance, fuel and labor - a construction team should conduct advance planning where to buy needed construction materials from the local market, plan your delivery schedule of construction materials just in time for actual consumption, and other considerations to maximize expenditures.
“It is all about thorough and careful planning with our team that helps us think of sustainable decisions regarding coastal projects,” he added.
As one of the best construction firms in Mindanao, Argus Builders not only support ecotourism development but also advocate the sustainability of construction process and choices to better improve and preserve sites with our quality construction services.
