Become Budget Savvy With Your Kitchen
Kitchens are one of the most expensive areas of the home to remodel due to the material and labor costs. But the good news is a budget kitchen remodel is possible.
As the homeowner, it's ultimately up to you to keep costs down for your kitchen remodeling project. With Design and Build Contractor Argus Builders, we have solutions on maximizing your budget yet achieve your dream kitchen.
Here are four tips to lower your kitchen remodel budget from Davao-based construction company Argus Builders Project Engineer June Gemang.
Refresh Rather Than Replace the Cabinets
Engr. Gemang said all tear-out-and-replace projects are more expensive than projects that keep most of the materials. Kitchen cabinetry is a prime example of this. New kitchen cabinets can be very expensive, especially if you need custom-made pieces to fit your space. Fortunately, there are ways to refresh your existing cabinets that are both eco-friendly and cost-effective.
Keep the Kitchen Layout
Dramatically changing the kitchen layout is one sure way to drive up the remodeling budget.
“For instance, moving plumbing for the sink, dishwasher, or refrigerator entails hiring plumbers. They'll have to punch holes in your walls to run new pipes, which means an added cost of materials in addition to the labor,” she said.
If you keep your kitchen layout, you generally won't have to add any new plumbing or electrical. You also can keep your existing flooring if you wish.
Gas versus Electric Stove
Both gas and electric stoves are essentially in the same price range, depending on the brand and model. If you buy a lower-end electric stove, you may save money upfront, but the costs of operating that stove will start to add up the more you cook.
To understand why gas stoves will save you money, Engineer Gemang said you first need to know how both gas and electric stoves use energy.
“When you use a gas stove, natural gas enters your stove from the main gas supply to your house. It's carried to the burner, where it combines with air inside a mixer tube. As that gas-air mixture is released through holes in the burner, it mixes with even more air. The ignition system lights the gas-air mixture, creating a blue flame. As you turn the burner control knob, you control exactly how much gas reaches the burner. The higher you turn it, the more gas is released.”, she said.
She added the pots and pans you select also make a difference in cooking time. To maximize the heat transmission on electric stoves, find flat-bottomed pans that make full contact with the eyes
Other cooking appliances can cut down on cost and energy as well. Microwaving is one of the cheapest and most energy-efficient cooking methods, using two-thirds less power than electric ovens. But since microwaves are more suitable for reheating rather than cooking, try out a toaster oven for baking small dishes.
